What are Functional Skills?

Functional skills are the skills that people need to live and work independently. They include things like reading, writing, maths and problem-solving. Functional skills are important for everyone, but they are especially important for people who want to get a job, go to college or volunteer.

The Functional Skills English qualification measures a student’s ability to use English to communicate effectively in a range of situations. It covers the following skills:

Reading: understanding written texts
Writing: communicating ideas in writing
Speaking: communicating ideas in speech
Listening: understanding spoken language

The Functional Skills Mathematics qualification measures a student’s ability to use mathematics to solve problems in everyday life. It covers the following skills:

Number: understanding and using numbers
Calculation: performing mathematical calculations
Problem-solving: using mathematics to solve problems
Reasoning: using logic and reasoning to solve problemss
